Review: Beauty Blender.. Should You Take The Plunge?

Now when I first received this as a gift at an event, I was SO excited!! I've been wanting to try this out for the longest time but they don't sell the Beauty Blender here in the United Arab Emirates..

I just couldn't wait to try it!!

This is what the Beauty Blender looks like wet

My First Attempt: I bust out my Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation (review) and applied it with the Beauty Blender..

Result? Disappointment! It was nothing special at all.. I was like That's it?! That's what the fuss is all about?! But I didn't give up.. I tried it again the next day and still wasn't great.. So I neglected it.. And decided to continue using my hands or my MAC 187 brush..

My Second Attempt: It wasn't until just recently when I re-discovered my Chanel Mat Lumiere and my Estee Lauder Double Wear Light foundations, that I decided to give my Beauty Blender another chance..

Results? AMAZING! Honestly.. If you've been reading my blog long enough, you'd know that I'm not one to give in to hypes that easily.. But this sponge is truly amazing with the right kind of foundation..

Product:

- Must be used wet.. It expands when wet
- Very soft, squishy and just so fluffffy! =P
- Gives a beautiful smooth finish..
- Blends the foundation really well.. No streaks, no accentuated pores which many foundations tend to give me.. This makes sure that the foundation is placed nicely on the skin..
- Gives any heavy foundation (medium/full coverage foundations), a very light-weight feel on the skin

Application

- I apply a little bit of the foundation on the bottom of the wet sponge and dab it on my face working in sections.. Of course I add more as I move to each part of my face..

My Final Thoughts: This is a great tool to have.. I've been using it everyday with my foundation.. However, it did not work well with my Chanel Aqua for some reason.. So you have to make sure that you're using the right foundation with it.. It usually works best with heavier foundations..

Is it a Must-Have? I'd say it's nice to have but you don't NEED it.. It's lovely and I'm enjoying it heaps, but I do think it's still over-hyped for what it is.. The MAC 187 and the Sigma F80 both give lovely finishes too.. But I'm glad I've tried the Beauty Blender..

Dupes? I know that there are some similar shaped sponges that work the same way but are much cheaper.. Like the:

Sonia Kashuk Blending Sponge

Cosmopolitan Blend Perfection Sponge

So I suggest you try those out first before taking the plunge on the Beauty Blender and see how you like the idea of applying your foundation with a sponge..

As for the

Sephora Precision Sponge

It is NOTHING like the Beauty Blender.. It's stiff and just doesn't give the same effect AT ALL.. So don't waste your money on it..

Would Re-Purchase? Hmmm I might.. Still deciding..

Have you tried the Beauty Blender?
Is it worth it in your opinion?

I've heard so much about the beauty blender, I can't imagine such a simple idea having such a great effect! x

They don't sell the Beauty Blender where I live either. I saw that Sephora have their own little sponge and wanted to try that out but I wanted to know if it's anything like the Beauty Blender?

Have you tried the Sephora sponge?

xx

Thanks for sharing your review! I know so many YT/bloggers have loved this product. I think I might get it this fall, once I start using thicker foundations again. Right now, with just using tinted moisturizer most days I don't think I would get much use of it.
I'm glad you tested it with another foundation ;)

@Lauren Rose - I know right? I thought it would be just another useless hyped item.. And although I still don't think it's worth all that hype, it's still a good tool

@Nora Schu - Nope.. Nothing like it.. Just updated my post for ya ;)

@Danielle - Yah it wouldn't work that great on tinted moisturizer from my experience.. But do try the dupes first I reckon

Oh crap! Thanks for the heads up love :)

FYI: I bought the beauty blender when it first came out in 2007 and if you clean it well it's just like a makeup brush ... I'm still using the same one!

Thanks for the review! I've never been interested in the Beauty Blender for a couple reasons - one is price, I still can't get over how much this thing costs! The other is that I pretty much have my foundation routine down pat already! I'm not really looking to change it up so this doesn't appeal to me! :) Thanks for giving us your opinion on it!

@Nora Schu - Anytime hun ;)

@Jessica - Oh that's awesome!! Really good to know coz I was wonderin what I'll do once this gets eeky =P Thanks for that sweets =)

@Haute Girl - Hope is meets your expectations =)

@sahar awan - Thanks =)

@Amyboo - Yah I don't think it's an item for everyone.. But like I said, I'm glad I tried it =)

@Kayleigh - Yah it's way too much for a sponge that you'll have to throw away after a while.. I'm telling you, it's not something that I will say GO OUT AND BUY IT coz you really don't need it..

I love using the Sonia Kaskuk sponge to apply concealer! I think it's great for the under eye area. :) I really want to try the original beauty blender!

I've only tried the Ulta version so far, but as far as I know it's nothing like original Beauty Blender, because it doesn't expand when wet and just isn't as soft. I still like it though, but I think I prefer buffing brushes for ease of use.

great post, so far everyone who has the beauty blender raves about it. I think im too lazy or impatient to use it though lol. Plus my new flat top sonia kashuk brush has been working perfectly for me :)

I only used this once and hated it, your post has convinced me to give it a proper chance!

@DSK Steph - Yah the Beauty Blender does a lovely job for concealer too!

@Rocaille - Yah brushes are easier coz we're used to them I think.. But once you get the hang of the Beauty Blender, it becomes effortless!

@MaviDeniz - I say if you're happy with what you've got.. Then don't bother with this at all

@PopBlush - Get a similar one to try it out first.. And if you love it, get the Beauty Blender for its full effect ;)

@Lilladylife - Everything deserves a second chance =P

I wanted to try check out the lipsticks but I didn't have time to go back.. the stores opened 12 and by then we had to leave to the airport.. but hopefully we will get an Inglot here in sweden aswell, pretty mean of them to leave us out ^^ =)

Great review!! I've always been sceptical to all the rave about this sponge, It's a spunge! But I guess there's something to it =) It's alot of money for a spunge though!

Mai said...

@Jamilla Camel - Definitely do then and let us know what you think of it ;)

@Tamara - awww thank you so much.. Really appreciate it =)

@MakeupbyThess - You're right.. It's too much $ for a sponge.. And it won't do miracles.. But it does give a lovely finish to your foundation..

I was about to buy the Sigma F80 and then my skin went dry and brushes just accentuated the dryness. So I switched back to sponges and began lemming this. I'm just not sure which to go with! Any suggestions?

Thanks for the review! I've been wanting to try this for ages! Every time I am at the cosmetics aisle in Target I think about purchasing the Sonia Kashuk version. I think I'll finally get one this weekend :)

Mai said...

@Eden-Avalon - I only tried the Beauty Blender so I can't help you there.. But they say that the Sonia Kashuk one gives the same results.. Only difference is that it won't last you as long as the Beauty Blender.. So I say go for the SK.. See how it works for you.. And if you love it, but the BB =)

@cominica - My pleasure hun =)

@Makeup Magpie - Yah try the SK version.. They say it gives almost exactly the same results but the sponge doesn't last as long is all.. Thaaank for passing by =)

Thanks for such a great in-depth review! I've bought the beauty blender for a friend but somehow have never tired it myself. It sounds really good!

Mai said...

@Penelope - It's a good tool to have if you've got issues with applying foundation like I do =P
